Bullying
Children learn best when they feel safe, respected, and cared for. In our continuing effort to create a safe and positive learning environment, the staff at Deer Creek Elementary School will be implementing a schoolwide bullying prevention program called Second Step for grades K-2 and Steps to Respect for grades 3-5. These programs are design to prevent bullying and promote responsible, respectful student behavior.

Deer Creek Elementary now has an anti-bullying policy and specific procedures for responding to bullying reports. The policy is posted in every classroom and in the office.

The school counselor, Mrs. Stickney is incorporating the lessons from Second Step and Steps to Respect into the guidance program. Mrs. Straughn facilitates the implementation of the program as well during Antler Alerts, her frequent visits into the classrooms, and the establishment of consistent consequences for bullying behaviors. Every staff member supports the implementation of our bullying prevention program by watching for signs of bullying and responding quickly and sensitively to all bullying reports.

Students in grades K-2 will participate in three basic units from the Second Step program. The units cover empathy training, impulse control, and anger management. Students in grades 3-5 will participate in the Steps to Respect program that covers lessons dealing with how to recognize bullying and report it, friendship skills that reduce the risk of being bullied, and empathy training.

Parent involvement is an important part of creating and maintaining a safe and positive school environment. If you have any questions or concerns about Steps to Respect, please feel free to contact Mrs. Straughn or Mrs. Stickney at 348-9100. Together, we can work to create a school that is safe and secure for all students.
