PRESS RELEASE
DEER CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
TAKE PRIDE IN AMERICA NATIONAL AWARD WINNER
(The only elementary school in the Nation to receive the
award
and the first school in Oklahoma.)
Deer
Creek Elementary received a phone call recently from
Washington, D.C. naming it the only elementary school in the
United States to receive the National Take Pride in America
Award. The elementary school and principal Debbie Straughn,
will be honored at an awards ceremony in late September at
the White House’s Executive Offices. Actor Clint Eastwood,
will also be on hand to present the National Award.
Take Pride in America, coordinated by the U.S. Department of
the Interior, is a National partnership program that
recruits, supports, and recognizes volunteers who work to
improve our land and environment. Take Pride involves
federal, state, and local governments.
The National Award is given to the school that best
exemplifies creativity and ingenuity in carrying out the
goals and mission of Take Pride in America. The award is
given to a school for a project (in this case it is Deer
Creek Elementary’s outdoor classroom and how they involve
every student and teacher) in curriculum that is related to
the world around them. It also includes parents and how
they volunteer at their school. This National Pride in
America Award is given to a school that exemplifies
excellence in all areas. Deer Creek Elementary is the first
school in Oklahoma to receive this National Award.
