Accelerated Reader
 

Welcome to another exciting year in Deer Creek Elementary's reading program. Guided reading, leveled readers, phonics, and enriched vocabulary are all vital components to our program. Accelerated Reader (AR) is an extension of putting into practice all of these parts. Our students have made significant gains in comprehension, strategies and skills, and developing a daily routine for reading at school and at home.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program designed to improve students reading achievement. Research indicates that by reading to and with your child everyday, his/her reading ability and comprehension skills are accelerated. Reading aloud is extremely important as it helps a child self monitor his/her own reading.

Each student in our school is given a Reading Log. The Star Reading assessment is given at the beginning of each nine weeks. (The Star Early Literacy is given to kindergarten and first grade.) This individualized assessment allows the classroom teacher to place a child at his/her instructional level in reading.

Students level and number of points needed is found at the top of the Reading Log in their weekly folder.

Additional assessment is given throughout the nine week period. As a student accelerates in his/her reading ability, their reading level increases accordingly.


Celebrations:
There are celebrations each quarter for students reaching their AR goals.

The chart below shows the amount of at-home reading time that Accelerated Reader recommends for each grade.

If you are unable to meet the goals on the chart nightly, it can be made up other nights or on the weekends. Our goal is for every child to become an independent reader. Please call if you have questions.
